Jonathan Carter (Germany, 1987) is a composer of electronic & acoustic music. His works emphasize a connection between the two genres, ever in pursuit of a style that seamlessly combines them. He received his BA (Music Theory/Composition & Piano Performance) from Appalachian State University in 2010 and a MA (Music Composition) in 2012 from the University of Louisville. He has studied with Scott Meister, Tracy Mendel, Steve Rouse, Krzysztof Wolek, Beat Furrer, Gerhard Eckel, and most recently Marko Ciciliani. Jonathan is currently enrolled at the University of Performing Arts Graz where he takes advantage of the resources and faculty of the IEM – Institute of Electronic Music.
With performances at venues including the Brevard Music Center Summer Festival, Ars Electronica Linz, and ZKM Next Generation 5 Karlsruhe, Jonathan’s music reaches an increasingly broadened spectrum of audience. In addition to his solo activities, he is a founding member of Elektrichka – an electronic media ensemble. Elektrichka regularly performs throughout Austria, with concerts extending into the surrounding region as well. Additionally, Jonathan is a founding member of Some Designers – a collection of media designers who host various artistic events throughout Austria.
Jonathan’s most recent projects include the construction of and performance with DIY electronic controller instruments. Coming in the fall of 2016, his collaboration with stage designer Rosa Wallbrecher will result in a theatrical production of Dostoyevsky’s Crime & Punishment set to electro-acoustic music.
